Healthy breakfast - Oats

Salam all,

Urmm ..... what's for breakfast? Nasi lemak? Roti canai? Tosai? Or perhaps Lontong? Which would you prefer? Having those items for breakfast are really mouth-watering and filling, BUT, mind the calories. At times we need to furnish our body with a healthy filling too. Why not try the oat meal for breakfast. You can make a variety of oat meal.

Health facts about oats:

Researchers found that antioxidants in oats actually obstruct the ability of blood cells to stick to artery walls.

This will reduce the possibility of heart attack.

Oatmeal is thought to be one of the few foods that can actually help lower cholesterol. This is because oatmeal contains soluble fiber, which is thought to decrease the amount of cholesterol absorbed by the intestines. Values below are for one cup of cooked oatmeal, no salt added.

Besides fiber, oats also contain proteins, fat and minerals.

Mine is the simplest version: (what to do.... always running against time)


2 or 3 table spoon of rolled oats (I did not take instant oats)
1 cup fresh milk
1 tablespoon honey

Put everything to boil in a pot. Once boiled and the oats is tender, its ready to be served. You can add any fruits of your like. Besides adding taste to it, it will also add the nutritional value in your diet. Among fruits that I have tested are thinly sliced apples, kiwi, strawberry and banana. I have yet to try mango, but I will try it next time. Adding nuts and raisins will also add to the taste.

By having this for breakfast at about 7.30am, it could really last me till noon or sometime more. its very filling.

Salam all,

A rarely found fruit. When I saw it at the market, I quickly grabbed it. Not that I was madly fond of the fruit but because it is rare. My kids have never had a peep at it. It's the Custard Apple or Nona (in Bahasa Melayu).

When fully ripe, the fruit has a tender texture and sweet in taste. You don't need a knife to cut it. In fact, when it is fully ripe, to cut it into half using a knife is a very challenging, you will not have the nice shape as I had up there. 40 years back, oooooppppssss ......, now you can guess my age, yes, 40 years or so back then, in the village, this fruit can be found behind the houses. To eat it is just the matter of plucking it from the tree and later to enjoy it with your friends after a tiring day on the field .... what a sweet memory!

Some healthy facts.

I did a short research on the health benefit of the fruit. It is rich in vitamin C and a source of anti-oxidant. Anti-oxidant will neutralize the free radicals which is very beneficial in cancer avoidance. It also contains fiber which helps in digestion.

So everybody, for a change, why not once a while, we take this custard apple as our fruit dietary.
Allah is great has created so many fruits for us to gain benefit from. Wallahua'lam.

My Style Chicken Rice

Salam all,

Today let's share another dish that was cooked last year (sebab tahun 2012 ni belum buat lagi juadah ni). It's the My Style Chicken Rice. Ye lah .. there's plenty of chicken rice elsewhere and everybody has their own way of making the chicken rice and this is my style.

The cooking is simple, just like how everybody else did, but at times it still turn out to be different. Kenapa yek??? Inilah yang dikatakan air tangan kot.

The ingredients:

For the rice
3 cups of rice - washed, rinsed
4 cups of chicken stock
herbs - ginger, clove, star anisse and cinnamon (1 each)
1 table spoon cooking oil
1 onion sliced

How to:
  1. Saute the onion together with the herbs till fragrant.
  2. Add the rice and followed by the water.
  3. Cover the pot and wait till it cooks.

The Chicken
Half chicken
*2 onions
*1 inch of ginger
*2 garlic
1 table spoon of honey
4 table spoon of black soy sauce

How to:
  1. Blend all the * ingredients.
  2. Mixed the blended ingredients with honey and black soy sauce.
  3. Marinate the chicken with the mixed ingredients. Let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat the oven to 175 degrees. Roast the chicken in the oven for 60 minutes (covered in aluminium foil) and another 15 minutes without the aluminium foil.
  5. The chicken will be so tender and it is ready to be served.

The Chilli
Blend 4 fresh red chillies and 2 garlic. Add 1 teaspoon sugar. One table spoon of vinegar and a oinch of salt. Cook on a low heat till it boils. Turn off the heat and serve.

Squid in Black Soy Sauce

Salam all,

Happy New Year!!! Hihi .... Finally, my first entry in 2012. Don't get me wrong, it does not mean that this is my first cooking since 2012. There's some cooking done (to say 'plenty' is a bit exaggerating, though). Anyway, today I would like to share the Squid in Black Soy Sauce.

This recipe is originated from Cik Mat Gebu's blog bearing the name Schechuan Squid. However, as usual, I did some modification to it and this is what it became. It taste good, believe me.

The ingredients:

5 medium sized squids - clean-up, remove the ink
3 dried chillies - cut halves
2 table spoon of dark soy sauce
2 table spoon of oyster sauce
1/2 cup of water
1 red onion cut into ring
tomatoes and capsicum for garnishing
1 table spoon cooking oil.

How to:
  1. Heat the oil in a griddle
  2. Put in the dried chillies. Fry till fragrant but not to let it changes to black.
  3. Put in the sauces. Followed by the water.
  4. Put in the squid. Do not cook the squid for too long or it will become elastic.
  5. Add in the garnishing item and onion.
  6. Serve hot.
Delicious to be eaten with the white rice.
